Fail Often Enough to Succeed

When the Modern Olympic Games came into being it was motivated by the observation that sport has the power to help us understand life’s lessons in meaningful ways. Maybe this is the reason that when I try to understand how to resolve difficult internal or external conflicts I turn to sport in search of insight.

We can overlook the impact that sport can have in structuring our thinking. This is something that I was reminded of yesterday when working with a group and discussing the impact of fear of failure on performance progress. It was a favourite Michael Jordan quote that provided the insight that would now stay with someone trying to bring about change in a challenging situation, so here it is again -

"I've missed more than 9,000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. Twenty-six times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed."

Thank you Michael
